ReplyDeleteI respect Karlie Kloss as a model, but I find this photoshoot extremely problematic on many levels. It perpetuates many offenses within multiple entertainment industries. Not only does this further show whitewashing of Asian culture, but it also appropriates and orientalizes the people, the history, and the land as well. This photoshoot continues the tradition of ignorance and it cannot be tolerated if we are to move forward in a "progressive" trajectory.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Cultural appropriation and white washing to the fullest
DeleteA "celebration of diversity" that serves to orientalize, sexualize, and tokenize asian women further perpetuating their otherness. This editorial serves as a primary example of how the language of diversity lends to limited understandings of cultural differences, ultimately providing a basis for exclusion rather than inclusion. For what purpose did Vogue choose to invoke a theme of diversity and who is being benefited or harmed?
ReplyDeleteI do not understand your objections. Female beauty DOES exist to me , per se......
DeleteI think its a beautiful shoot in a gorgeous land. It's art, of course, and as always its beautify is in the eye of the beholder. If you don't like it, don't look at it. I find it lovely.
ReplyDeleteWell said. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. It's beautiful!
Deleteur probably white
DeleteBeauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find it a beautiful form of art, a wonderful shoot in a lovely setting. Certainly, if you don't like it, you don't need to look.
ReplyDeleteClearly all you are seeing is a pretty girl in a pretty dress with pretty colours.
DeleteEducate yourself on the issues lest you make further asinine comments.
Great more whitewashing.

ReplyDeleteWTF.... its 2017. We're supposed to know this sit aint OK.
ReplyDeleteHonest to fucking god.
Get over yourself.
DeleteHere is an article that offers a look at some Japanese responses to this shoot.

Of course, not everyone's opinion is represented in the RocketNews24 article, but for the most part the reaction is positive.
I think the shoot is beautiful, and the backdrops are very nostalgic to me: I lived, went to school and worked there for over 6 years. I don't see this as cultural appropriation, more like "cosplay inspired-by."
